Umbilical Cord

Büyükdere35 hosts the exhibition "Umbilical Cord/Göbek Bağı," curated by Gülsüm Turgut and featuring the works of Selin Balcı, Beyza Boynudelik, Nur Gürel, and Erkut Terliksiz.

The umbilical cord, carrying blood from the mother to the baby and vice versa, is a two-way path that ensures the nourishment of the baby in the mother's womb. After birth, this connection is established with nature through air, water, and nutritional needs. In both cases, the proper functioning of this connection is of vital importance.

In today's context, where the relationship between humans and nature has regained significance due to climate change, scientific explanations for this issue draw attention to the dangers to human roles and futures. In the realm of art practices, this context brings together artists who question the effects of this process on nature, as well as the existence and awareness states of contemporary humans, presented as ideal in the current way of life.

Selin Balcı's bio-art works metaphorically link the biological interactions of microorganisms and the aesthetic results of these interactions to human behaviors. Beyza Boynudelik's figures attempt to communicate with nature while simultaneously destroying it, Nur Gürel applies manipulations with primitive sensitivity to ready-made visual images, and Erkut Terliksiz creates amorphous and human-shaped artworks by allowing random results on found materials and their alternative surfaces. The exhibition invites the viewer to be disturbed by the cause-and-effect of their actions and often encourages them to question themselves.
