BEKİR SERT

Bekir Sert (b. 1984) began his artistic career in 1999 with the fanzine manga he published in Japan and subsequent manga works. Through his linguistics thesis at Oxford University, he introduced two terms (capsonym and kinaesthetic algorithm) to the fields of linguistics and lexicography, earning him lifetime membership in the Oxford Union. He has held solo and group exhibitions in New York, Paris, Istanbul, and Capri. With his work in these exhibitions, Bekir Sert became part of private collections, designing minimal diagrams on canvas and wooden panels. The artist, through these diagrammatic paintings, compiles a visual dictionary, similar to his linguistic studies, and refers to himself as a visual dictionary designer (visual lexicographer). Elements frequently seen in his work include sirens, roses, and circles and columns representing binary codes, or "0"s and "1"s. By using the storytelling techniques found in manga, the artist creates a saga in the simplicity of diagrams.
